When can I enroll in Medicare?

You can enroll in Medicare exactly three months prior to turning 65. You’ll want to complete the application three months before turning 65 because processing has been slower (due to the Covid situation). It is preferred that you do this online at Medicare.gov as visiting your local Social Security office may not be an option. I can assist with enrolling online.

Do I need to apply for Medicare if I'm already receiving Social Security (early retirement anytime before 65)?

If you're receiving monthly Social Security checks, you won't need to apply for Medicare, in most cases. You'll be sent official Medicare card a few months before you turn 65. If you're still working and/or have employer insurance coverage, you won't need Medicare (unless your employer requires it). Check with HR. If you choose to postpone taking Medicare at anytime (after turning 65), you'll need to sign the back of the card and return it.

Do I really need a Medigap/Medicare Supplement policy?

Do I really need a Medigap/Medicare Supplement policy? Yes, in our opinion. Medicare doesn't cover 100% of your medical expenses. Keep in mind, with just original Medicare, there are no limits for out-of-pocket expenses that you would be responsible for and this could be devastating if you had a very bad year, medically.

When can I apply for a secondary policy like a Medigap/Medicare Supplement or Advantage Plan?

In VA, you can apply up to six months early for the Medigap/Medicare Supplement. Each state is different. You can apply for the Advantage plan three months prior to turning 65. Keep in mind, that you'll need your Medicare number to enroll.

I don't take any medications; do I need a prescription plan?

Many people ask this question, and our answer is always YES. The reasons are simple...Medicare will penalize you for every month that you COULD have had a plan and didn't. So, for example, if you went a whole year without a plan, and then decided to enroll in one, your penalty will be around $4 per month extra, on top of the cost of the plan.
